Shipwrecked treasures have been in the news in recent weeks. Here's another exciting discovery to add to the list. This time, enterprising historians-turned-treasure hunters have uncovered a 10-carat emerald and gold ring off the choppy waters of the Florida Keys. The ornate piece of history, initially valued at US$500,000, is believed to be from a ship sunk off the coast during the infamous 1622 hurricane.

Archaeologists Lower Camera Into Early Mayan Tomb

A small, remote-controlled camera lowered into an early Mayan tomb in southern Mexico has revealed an apparently intact funeral chamber with offerings and red-painted wall murals, researchers said Thursday.

Footage of the approximately 1,500-year-old tomb at the Palenque archaeological site showed a series of nine figures depicted in black on a vivid, blood-red background. Archaeologists say the images from one of the earliest ruler's tombs found at Palenque will shed new light on the early years of the once-great city state.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History said archaeologists have known about the tomb since 1999, but have been unable to enter it because the pyramid standing above it is unstable and breaking into the chamber could damage the murals.

It said the floor appears to be covered with detritus and it is not immediately evident in the footage if the tomb contains recognizable remains. But archaeologist Martha Cuevas said the jade and shell fragments seen on the video are "part of a funerary costume."

Beyonce “The Beautiful Ones/ Sex On Fire (Prince/ Kings of Leon Cover – Glastonbury 2011)”

Proving once again why Beyonce reigns as the Baddest. Bitch. In. The. Game: this truly epic performance the R&B-pop diva brought to the Glastonbury 2011 stage, a two-for-one cover combo of Prince’s forever gorgeous Purple Rain ballad “The Beautiful Ones” and Kings of Leon’s endlessly remade “Sex On Fire”.

Whatever your feelings on her latest album (streaming in full here) or general level of Hate towards anything she ever does, it’s hard to deny the spectacular entrance fee-worthiness of Beyonce’s performance here as she sends the massive-sized audience before her into a tizzy with her every curly weave whip, stage dry-hump, lip lick, sky-piercing high note and earth-rumbling growl (you can almost smell the crowd’s hysterical mixture of giddiness, sweat and armpit must through the screen), basically makes it unnecessary for any artist to ever to attempt to cover these two songs ever again (Hell, The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known as Prince and the Followill clan themselves may even think twice when it comes to performing these cuts again–okay, maybe not Prince), and, ultimately, reminds us how great it would be if Bey ever decided to truly step outside the box and make an entire album marrying the worlds of rock and soul (or, at the least, a rock-leaning all-covers collection) mirroring the awesomeness she displays here.

The magician who can walk on water

He may be a relatively unknown illusionist, but you could hardly describe Dynamo as being wet behind the ears.

And the magician, whose real name is Steve Frayne, certainly proved this was the case as he 'walked' across the River Thames.

The nifty footwork was a suitably jaw-dropping publicity stunt for his new TV series.

The Bradford-born illusionist, 28, made it half way across the stretch of the river in front of the Houses of Parliament in London before he was picked up by what appeared to be a River Police boat.

Biblical epic: Magician Dynamo poses while standing in the middle of the River Thames where he performed an illusion in which he appeared to walk on water

Is organic food safe?

Pravda.ru: Research has left the scientific community stunned after a new deadly multi-resistant strain of E.coli has appeared in Europe. Russia reacted immediately (sensibly), freezing all vegetable imports from the European Union until it could clarify where the source was, something it has not been able to do.

We would like to introduce the theme with excellent research work undertaken by Brazilian journalists Fernanda Aranda, Lívia Machado e Yara Achôa, writing for IG São Paulo* on organic foods, after the death of at least 37 people in Europe, with one quarter of those affected presenting horrifying symptoms - fits, strokes and coma, associated with Haemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a complication of E.coli infection.

Millionaires invested more in art, luxury in 2010

Demand for art, watches, rare wines, vintage cars and other offbeat investments that set pulses racing expanded in 2010 as wealth levels of the world's super-rich rebounded from the financial crisis, a report said.

"The value of many categories of investments of passion rose and HNWIs (high net-worth individuals) made acquisitions for the aesthetic and emotional appeal and their potential to return value," Capgemini and Merrill Lynch said in the World Wealth Report 2011 published on Wednesday.

Growing wealth in emerging economies, especially in Asia -- which surpassed Europe in millionaires and wealth last year -- helped spur a revival in markets for these aptly named investments, the authors of the report said.

In times of low interest rates and volatile stock markets, alternative investments allow investors to diversify by buying assets with little correlation to global financial markets, thus offering potential shelter from market turbulence.

Luxury collectibles such as fancy cars, boats and jets accounted for almost a third of these investments in 2010. Chinese demand for expensive cars made by Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari (part of Fiat) jumped last year, the report said.

Individual tastes tend to determine whether a millionaire prefers investing in cars, watches or wine, while artworks are more likely to be acquired for their potential to gain value, the authors wrote.

"Newly wealthy Chinese buyers are widely reported to be keen bidders and buyers at galleries and auction houses, especially to acquire the fast-diminishing supply of works from native artists," the authors of the report said.

Art aficionados seemed willing to pay high prices at Art Basel, the world's top fair for modern and contemporary art, last week, suggesting the art market is returning to pre-crisis peaks.

Meanwhile demand for diamonds as well as gold jewelry and coins benefited from rising prices for these raw materials.

"Record prices for diamonds at international auctions in 2010 exemplified the growing trend among the world's HNWIs to see large diamonds as a safe and high-growth investment alternative," the report said, adding Russian and Middle Eastern investors were particularly keen on the expensive gems. Romain Jerome Space Invaders Watches

RJ-Romain Jerome, in connivance with TAITO Corporation (TAITO), creates by agreeing two 78-piece limited series in honour of the Space Invaders ...

Manuel Emch, CEO of RJ-Romain Jerome, freely admits to belonging to the generation of former Space Invaders junkies. The game has become a legend for all those who grew up in the 80s, since it was the first "Killer app" for video game consoles installed in gaming arcades. The Space Invaders craze even led to a shortage of 100-yen coins when it was first released in Japan. Space Invaders with its pixelated figures was the first ever "iconic" form of entertainment: thousands of hours of TV programs and hundreds of cultural exhibitions have been devoted to this generational "legend".

By agreement with TAITO Corporation (TAITO), RJ-Romain Jerome is paying tribute to late-20th century pop culture by launching a double limited-edition of Space Invaders watches, designed like generational totems. By allowing the Space Invaders to proliferate on the dial of these watches, Manuel Emch is proudly proclaiming the brand’s resolutely standout mission within the fine arts of contemporary watchmaking.

Did Mars have an ancient ocean? Remarkable images show teardrop-shaped islands which could have once been deep underwater

Mounds of earth that have been found on the surface of Mars may once have been covered by sprawling lakes, scientist have claimed.

The incredible photographs showing valleys and channels were taken from the Mars Odyssey spacecraft which arrived at Mars in 2001.

Experts believe that the teardrop-shaped islands on the red planet could have formed deep underwater millions of years ago.

Seabed? Pictures taken by the Mars Odyssey spacecraft which arrived at the planet in 2001 show landforms which scientists believe were created under vast expanses of water

The breakthrough could add to evidence that cast oceans that supported life were once present on the planet.

Inches away from being America's Fukushima: Nuclear plant dangerously close to being engulfed by Missouri floods

A nuclear plant was inches away from being engulfed by the bloated Missouri River after several levees in the area failed to hold back its surging waters, raising fears it could become America's Fukushima.

Dramatic pictures show the moment the plant was threatened with being shut down today, as water levels rose ominously to within 18 inches of its walls.

The river has to hit 902 feet above sea level at Brownville before officials will shut down the Cooper Nuclear Plant, which sits at 903 feet. It stopped and ebbed slightly yesterday, a reprieve caused by levee breaches in northwest Missouri - for now.

Engulfed: The nuclear power station in Nebraska came within inches of having to be shut down

Flooding is a major concern all along the river because of the massive amounts of water that the Army Corps of Engineers has released from six dams. Any significant rain could worsen the flooding especially if it falls in Nebraska, Iowa or Missouri, which are downstream of the dams.

The World's Most Expensive Hotel Rooms

In fact, as with all hotels, there is plenty of bargaining room (no pun intended). The family looking to spend a month or so will usually be able to negotiate a lower price, and companies can save by using a corporate rate. The numbers of people who actually pay full freight are rare. Billionaires also didn't get where they are by being suckers.

So what exactly do you get when you're spending between $5,000 and $25,000 for a hotel room, which is the range of our list? Space is the most obvious. All of the rooms on the list are huge, averaging more than 5,000 square feet, and that is not counting terraces and balconies--and the occasional private cinema. The other amenity is service. Most of these hotel rooms come with a personal butler or a chauffeured Rolls-Royce at your disposal. Those that do not have a butler or assistant on hand have an implied "anything you want" rule.

When looking at the list as a whole, the hotels in the $5,000-$6,000 range (in Hong Kong, London and Las Vegas) seem like a relative bargain compared with the priciest (New York, Cannes and Rome). Of course, if you want to rationalize the expenditure you could say that the rooms topping the list are a good value: The Martinez Hotel in Cannes comes out to 44 cents a square foot, while the Ciragan Palace Hotel Kempinski is 66 cents a square foot. Anyone, even a billionaire, can afford that

Best Places To Visit In Dubai

Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates and is located south of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula. It has the largest population with the second largest land territory by area of all the emirates, after Abu Dhabi. In the country’s legislature, only Dubai and Abu Dhabi have the veto power over the critical matters of national importance. In 2007, Dubai was the 8th most visited city of the world and it is expected to accommodate over 15 million tourists by 2015.

It is a great place for tourism and is famous world over. The primary activity of the tourists is shopping but there are also other modern and ancient attractions in Dubai which are a tempting factor for the tourists to visit this place.
Let us see some of the worth seeing places in Dubai. These places are not numbered in the increasing order of their attractiveness because everybody has his own taste about tourism. What I have tried here is to encompass some of the best places which you must visit in Dubai.

Differences Between the North and South Poles

The two poles are at extreme opposites of the planet, and many of their features are also polar opposites. This list looks at ten of the most significant differences between two of Earth’s most inhospitable areas.

Metamorphoses

The arctic area is located in the North Pole region and has a natural melting cycle during which almost half of the ice shelf melts away in summer, only to freeze again in winter and come back to its original size. During winter, the arctic ice shelf has a surface almost equal to that of the US. However, an unsettling study has recently revealed that the 3.5 km thick ice shelf from Greenland is melting away so fast that half of it could disappear by the end of the century. Other studies suggest that the whole Arctic region could become iceless during summer, in less than a century.

'Magic Mushrooms' Can Improve Psychological Health Long Term

The psychedelic drug in magic mushrooms may have lasting medical and spiritual benefits, according to new research from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

The mushroom-derived hallucinogen, called psilocybin, is known to trigger transformative spiritual states, but at high doses it can also result in "bad trips" marked by terror and panic. The trick is to get the dose just right, which the Johns Hopkins researchers report having accomplished.

In their study, the Hopkins scientists were able to reliably induce transcendental experiences in volunteers, which offered long-lasting psychological growth and helped people find peace in their lives — without the negative effects.

"The important point here is that we found the sweet spot where we can optimize the positive persistent effects and avoid some of the fear and anxiety that can occur and can be quite disruptive," says lead author Roland Griffiths, professor of behavioral biology at Hopkins.

Peaceful Men in The World

Baha’u'llah

Baha’u’llah was born in 1817, a member of one of the great patrician families of Persia. The family could trace its lineage to the ruling dynasties of Persia’s imperial past, and was endowed with wealth and vast estates. Turning His back on the position at court which these advantages offered Him, Baha’u’llah became known for His generosity and kindliness which made Him deeply loved among His countrymen.

This privileged position did not long survive Baha’u’llah’s announcement of support for the message of the Báb. Engulfed in the waves of violence unleashed upon the Bábis after the Báb’s execution Baha’u’llah suffered not only the loss of all His worldly endowments but was subjected to imprisonment, torture and a series of banishments. The first was to Baghdad, where, in 1863, He announced Himself as the One promised by the Báb. From Baghdad, Baha’u’llah was sent to Constantinople, to Adrianople and finally to Acre, in the Holy Land, where He arrived as a prisoner, in 1868.

Las Vegas Sands plans expansion across Asia

Casino giant Las Vegas Sands is planning to expand across Asia as figures suggested another Asian country will overtake Las Vegas in terms of gambling.

The gaming giant, which has already constructed massive resorts in Singapore and Macau, is looking to expand to other Asian nations and even to Europe, according to reports from the Global Gaming Expo Asia this week.

Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and Korea are among the company’s Asia targets, with boss Sheldon Adelson describing the region as its “first preference.”

Other targets include Spain, where Las Vegas Sands is eyeing a €15 billion EuroVegas strip development with 123,000 rooms, either in Madrid or Barcelona.

Although Macau overtook Las Vegas in terms of gambling revenue back in 2006, America’s ‘Sin City’ was dealt another blow this week by the news that Singapore is expected to out-earn it this year, despite boasting just two integrated resorts.

Macau, a favored destination for Chinese tourists from the mainland, shows no sign of slowing, opening the new 2,200-room Galaxy Macau resort in May.

It is already home to The Venetian Macau, a 980,000 square meter development (owned by Las Vegas Sands) which is the largest casino in the world.

Mediterranean Artichoke and Fresh Fava Stew

Favas, artichokes, spring onions and green garlic are all fleetingly in season at the same time. Here’s a way to use them all together. This dish is based on a Greek olive oil recipe, meaning that the vegetables are traditionally stewed in two or three times as much oil as I use here. I substitute water for some of the oil.
