Abu Dhabi posts record tourist results

A fall in Abu Dhabi‘s hotel prices has prompted a record year for the Emirate so far, according to figures released July 27.

The first six months of 2011 showed the best hotel results in the history of the country, with the number of visitors climbing 11 percent to just over one million.

Authorities hope to break the two million visitor target for the first time this year.

The figures also suggested that people are staying 13 percent longer in the country than in 2010, with the average length of a stay just under three nights.

According to the tourist board, average room rates have fallen by 15 percent compared to the same period in 2010, making Abu Dhabi a more affordable destination than upscale competitors such as Paris, New York or Tokyo.

That trend could also continue, with a glut of new hotels expected to open in the emirate before the year is out — a total of ten luxury five-star properties will open their doors in the coming months.

Big names include Westin, Anantara, Hyatt, Park Hyatt, St Regis, Rocco Forte Hotel, Ritz-Carlton and Jumeirah at Etihad Towers

Happy birthday to me! Rapper Soulja Boy treats himself to a $55 million private jet

Singer makes extravagant purchase despite owing $30,000 in taxes

Most celebrate turning 21 with a modest party and a few kind gifts.
But not if you are a multimillion dollar rapper and producer.

DeAndre Cortez Way, otherwise known as Soulja Boy, the man behind rap hits such as Crank That (Soulja Boy) and Turn My Swag On, is splashing out on a $55 million private jet to celebrate his milestone, his management told TMZ.

While the jet already has a hefty price tag of $35 million, the singer has spent an additional $20 million to upgrade the new mobile pad.
The upgrade include Italian leather seats, flat screen TVs, four liquor bars, a customized travertine-tiled floor, a revamped bathroom, Brazilian hardwood cabinets and a custom paint job on the exterior, featuring his logo.

And the rapper hasn't stopped there with his extravagant birthday spending.
He has also splurged $300,000 (£183,000) on his own birthday bash, which will take place in Miami tonight.
But despite the extravagant purchase, Soulja Boy reportedly owes almost $30,000 (£18,272) in back taxes.

RaderOnline.com reported that that the State of California filed a $26,805 tax lien against the singer in March.

He also owed the State of Mississippi $3,571 in back taxes but he paid the full amount last week.
And his home in Georgia was foreclosed on last year, according to the Detroit News Tax Watchdog blog.
Soulja Boy was number 18 on the Forbes list of top hip-hop's earners in 2010, with a reported $6 million earned from touring and ringtone downloads.

Singer Sean Kingston, who recently recovered from a horrible jet-ski accident, is on the star-studded guestlist tonight, as well as American rapper and actor, Bow Wow, and Orlando Magic basketballer, Dwight Howard.

The Bentley emblem on the top of the pen echoes the one on the car’s staring button and the wood inserts are the same as those in the real Muslanne: Burr Walnut, Burr Oak or Dark Stained Vavona. This model is available in sterling silver and 18 karat rose gold. Production is limited to nine fountain pens and nine roller balls for the gold version and 90 fountain pens and 90 roller balls for the silver version.

Katy Perry's husband 'not a fan'

Katy Perry believes keeping "good people around" helps her deal with the pressures of being one of the world's biggest pop stars, which currently has her on a global concert tour and taking part in her first movie.

As the music world mourns the death of British singer Amy Winehouse, Perry told Reuters she is not tempted by the hedonistic lifestyle that has helped fuel the demise of talented performers before her.
Perry, whose hits include Teenage Dream and Firework, said she is able to stay away from the wild, party life with the help of honest, supportive people around her, such as her British actor/comedian husband Russell Brand, himself a recovering drug addict who is now clean and sober.

Prince Charles a 'snake oil salesman': professor

A leading professor of complementary medicine accused Britain's heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and other backers of alternative therapies on Monday of being "snake-oil salesmen" who promote products with no scientific basis.

Edzard Ernst, who is stepping down from his post as Britain's only professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University, also said a long-running dispute with the Prince about the merits of alternative therapies had cost him his job - a claim Prince Charles's office denied.
"Almost directly, Prince Charles has managed to interfere in my professional life and almost managed to close my unit," Ernst told reporters at a briefing.

A spokeswoman for Prince Charles told Reuters the royal heir was not involved in the dispute with Ernst and that she would not respond to the professor's comments about snake-oil salesmen.

Ernst's complementary medicine research unit at Exeter's Peninsula School of Medicine had been threatened with outright closure, but the university has now offered it a reprieve and says it is seeking a successor to Ernst to lead it.

Sir Richard Branson’s paradise island for rent

RICHARD BRANSON has put his luxury island retreat at Noosa up for rent. As might be expected, Makepeace Island on the Noosa River, upstream from Tewantin, is an absolute cracker.

Branson bought the 9.2-hectare island with Brett Godfrey, the Australian head of Virgin Blue, in 2003. But it took another five years before building started. Branson wanted something a touch more extravagant than the local authorities deemed appropriate but in the end he settled for a Bali-style compound consisting of a main recreational building, a four-bedroom guest house and three two-bedroom bures. It can accommodate 22 guests. There's also a huge pool, tennis court and media room.

Prices start at $7900 for up to eight guests, rising upwards of $14,990 for 22. The tariff includes breakfast, lunch and dinner plus transfers. But anyone hoping for a glimpse of the bearded wonder will be disappointed, Makepeace Island is only available when the owners don't need it.

WAS AMY WINEHOUSE'S DEATH INEVITABLE?

Troubled British singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment earlier today, sparking speculation about how she died. Police have not determined a cause of death, and much remains unknown about the circumstances of her demise. Winehouse could have died from any number of things, from suicide to homicide to an unknown medical condition.

But the popular assumption is, of course, that she likely died from a drug overdose (the unspoken addendum is that no one should be surprised that Winehouse is dead at 27 given her past). As an ABC News story noted,

Kate Middleton spent the day with her royal grandmother-in-law Queen Elizabeth on Friday, touring a new exhibit at Buckingham Palace dedicated to the Royal Wedding gown.

According to NYMag.com, the queen added, "it's made to look very creepy.''
The problem? The mannequin is missing its head.

Pentagon looks to social media as new battlefield

The Pentagon is asking scientists to figure out how to detect and counter propaganda on social media networks in the aftermath of Arab uprisings driven by Twitter and Facebook.

The US military's high-tech research arm, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), has put out a request for experts to look at "a new science of social networks" that would attempt to get ahead of the curve of events unfolding on new media.

The program's goal was to track "purposeful or deceptive messaging and misinformation" in social networks and to pursue "counter messaging of detected adversary influence operations," according to DARPA's request for proposals issued on July 14.

The project echoes concerns among top military officers about the lightning pace of change in the Middle East, where social networks have served as an engine for protest against some longtime US allies.

Some senior officers have spoken privately of the need to better track unrest revealed in social networks and to look for ways to shape outcomes in the Arab world through Twitter, Facebook or YouTube.

Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone Details Awkward Mark Zuckerberg Meeting

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone joined Peter Sagal on NPR's "Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me" over the weekend to be tested on his knowledge of Marcel Proust, Joseph Stalin, and Bill Clinton.

While on the show, Stone also shared some anecdotes about life in Silicon Valley, what people shouldn't tweet, and an awkward meeting he and Evan Williams, Twitter's former CEO, had with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The rendez-vous was the one at which Zuckerberg discussed his interest in acquiring Twitter (Twitter ultimately chose not to sell to Facebook and remains an independent company). According to what Stone shared with Sagal on NPR, Zuckerberg didn't exactly "get" Stone's sense of humor.

Rihanna Falls During Loud Tour Live Performance

Rihanna took a tumble at a recent Loud tour stop in Canada.

Midway through performing her hit single, 'What's My Name?' at the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta on June 22, the Bajan pop star, dressed in her trademark bikini outfit and heels, tripped over her own two feet and fell to her hands and knees. But RiRi, whose Loud tour kicked off June 4 in Baltimore, proved she could recover as quick as her Loud single hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. She got up and shrugged off the fall, picking up into the next dance move and singing "Oh na na."

The tumbling pop star epidemic has reached new heights within the last year, and stilettos usually end up being the culprit. Christina Aguilera slipped following a performance at the 2011 Grammys and Alicia Keys also gave people a scare when she fell on her back while performing pregnant during the Essence Festival last summer. Ladies be careful!

With Rihanna's U.S. tour out on the road through July 24 in the U.S. and picking up again in the Caribbean, South America and then Europe this fall, fans can let out a sigh of relief that she didn't sideline herself with a sprained ankle or broken wrist.

Perhaps feeling a self-concious, she wore a long scarf around her neck and also hid behind a large black Yves Saint Laurent handbag.

South Sudan becomes own country Saturday amid fears of conflict over split

The people of South Sudan finally get their own country on Saturday, an emotional independence celebration few thought possible during a half century of civil wars and oppression that left more than 2 million dead.

Military parades and celebrations will burst forth Saturday in front of dozens of visiting world leaders. But when that party ends, South Sudan must face grim realities: It will be one of the most underdeveloped countries on the planet, only 15 per cent of its citizens can read and fears of renewed conflict abound.

South Sudan's successful independence drive was made possible by a 2005 peace deal between Sudan's north and south. Last January, former guerrilla fighters shed tears as they cast votes to break away from the control of the Khartoum-based north.

Among those who cast ballots at special U.S. polling stations were some of the 3,800 war orphans known as the Lost Boys of Sudan, who ran away from war and were taken in by communities in the United States.
