Pollution from traffic, planes and power stations 'killing 13,000 Britons a year'

Power station emissions have bigger health impacts in northern England, where emissions from five major plants tend to congregate

Pollution from traffic, planes and power stations is killing almost 13,000 Britons a year, researchers claim.

The alarming death toll is more than four times greater than the number killed on the roads.

Emissions from car and lorry exhaust was the single greatest contributor to premature death, affecting some 3,300 people annually. In comparison fewer than 3,000 died in road accidents in the UK in 2005 - the latest data available.

After road transport, emissions from shipping and aviation cause 1,800 early deaths annually, followed by those from power plants which are responsible for 1,700.

The study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that emissions originating elsewhere in Europe cause an additional 6,000 early deaths in the UK annually.

In turn UK emissions cause 3,100 premature deaths a year in other EU countries.

Bones and Vitamin E

Taking vitamin E supplements may actually WEAKEN bones, study shows

It is dubbed the anti-ageing vitamin. But vitamin E may make bones old and frail before their time.

Animals fed on a diet supplemented with the vitamin had bones 20 per cent weaker than those that ate normally, a preliminary study found.

Worryingly, the effect was seen after just eight weeks.

The scientists behind the research said that given the popularity of vitamin E supplements, a larger study on people is now warranted.

The vitamin, which occurs naturally in cereals, nuts, olive oil and egg yolks, is credited with helping hold back the hands of time by 'fighting ageing from within'.

Benefits are said to include cutting the risk of heart disease, cancers and cataracts, as well as helping keep the mind sharp into old age and the skin supple.

One of the world's most popular supplements, it is taken daily by hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Britons. In the US, more than one in ten adults take vitamin E tablets.

April nor'easter dumps rain, snow on East Coast

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A nor'easter packing soaking rain and springtime snow churned up the Northeast on Monday, unleashing a burst of winter, closing some schools and triggering power outages in communities that were basking in record warmth a month ago.

The earliest hits were on higher ground, where snow-laden tree limbs pulled down power lines and commuters navigated slushy roads to work and school. Up to a foot of snow or more was forecast for higher elevations through Tuesday morning.

At the peak Monday, utilities reported about 50,000 customers without power in Pennsylvania and central and western New York.

Avocados 'can help keep you young' and fight off diseases by tackling dangerous molecules

Avocados could be a weapon in the fight against ageing and disease, say scientists.

Oil from the fruit was shown in tests to combat free radicals – dangerous molecules said to have a hand in everything from ageing to heart disease and cancer.

These are particularly common inside mitochondria, the tiny powerhouses in our cells that turn the food we eat into energy.

Many ‘antioxidant’ chemicals in vegetables and fruits such as carrots and tomatoes can mop up free radicals – but they can’t make their way inside mitochondria.

Those in avocados can, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s annual conference heard. Researcher Christian Cortes-Rojo said: ‘The problem is that the antioxidants in [other] substances are unable to enter mitochondria.

‘So free radicals go on damaging mitochondria, causing energy production to stop and the cell to collapse and die.

‘An analogy would be that, during an oil spill, if we cleaned only the spilled oil instead of fixing the perforation where oil is escaping, then the oil would go on spilling, and fish would die anyway.’

Giant Sinkhole In Sweden !

Incredible Images Show Giant Sinkhole In Sweden Keeps Expanding!

It looks like something taken straight from a horror movie. An enormous hole leading to hell, some would say. But this is not a movie.

This is a real and dangerous phenomenon. New shocking images clearly show the enormous pit in Sweden is expanding.

The 200 foot wide open pit is called the "Fabiangropen" (Fabian pit) and is in the Malmberget area is located at Gällivare, 75km from Kiruna, Sweden.

As you can see on the map, it is in the northern regions of Sweden.

Due to presence of many orebodies, mining at Malmberget is conducted at different levels at 600m, 815m and 1,000m.

The enormous sinkhole at Malmberget is expanding. This is an image showing the giant pit from above.

The mining company LKAB has now taken new pictures of the pit.

In the pictures you see the new Fabian pit which has expanded during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday in the former cavity full width.

The pit is square and 150×150 meters high.

Hidden Chemicals In Popular Perfumes & Colognes

A new analysis reveals that top-selling fragrance products—from Britney Spears’ Curious and Hannah Montana Secret Celebrity to Calvin Klein Eternity and Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce —contain a dozen or more secret chemicals not listed on labels, multiple chemicals that can trigger allergic reactions or disrupt hormones, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety by the beauty industry’s self-policing review panels.

The study of hidden toxic chemicals in perfumes comes on the heels of report by the President’s Cancer Panel, which sounded the alarm over the understudied and largely unregulated toxic chemicals used by millions of Americans in their daily lives. The Cancer Panel report recommends that pregnant women and couples planning to become pregnant avoid exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals due to cancer concerns. Hormone disruptors that may play a role in cancer were found in many of the fragrances analyzed for this study.

A rose may be a rose. But that rose-like fragrance in your perfume may be something else entirely, concocted from any number of the fragrance industry’s 3,100 stock chemical ingredients, the blend of which is almost always kept hidden from the consumer.

Makers of popular perfumes, colognes and body sprays market their scents with terms like “floral,” “exotic,” or “musky,” but they don’t disclose that many scents are actually a complex cocktail of natural essences and synthetic chemicals – often petrochemicals.

“This monumental study reveals the hidden hazards of fragrances,” said Anne C. Steinemann, Ph.D, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Professor of Public Affairs, University of Washington. “Secondhand scents are also a big concern. One person using a fragranced product can cause health problems for many others.”

Three Cups of Tea a Day Slashes Your Breast Cancer Risk

Just three cups of tea a day can reduce the risk of breast cancer in young women. New research shows that the chances of developing a tumor drop by around 37 percent in women under 50 who drank tea at least three times daily.

Older women who consumed similar amounts did not see a the same benefit; researchers theorized that the anti-cancer properties of tea may have a more potent effect on the types of tumors that tend to grow in younger women.

Although the health benefits of tea are well known, they have long been considered to mostly affect heart disease. A study last year showed four cups a day could reduce your risk of a heart attack. However, other recent studies have suggested that tea can protect against skin cancer, ovarian cancer and even weak bones.

Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, other than water. Even in the United States, which is typically considered a coffee-drinking nation, tea can be found in 80 percent of all households, according to the Tea Association of the USA.

Although I still believe that pure water should make up the majority of your daily fluid intake, it’s becoming increasingly clear that high-quality tea has numerous health benefits to offer.

Among them is growing evidence that the polyphenols in tea, which include EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) and many others, are protective against cancer. In this most recent study, women under 50 who drank three or more cups of tea a day had a 37 percent reduced risk of developing breast cancer.

Other studies have also highlighted tea’s potential to fight skin cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer, and compelling evidence suggests that the polyphenols in green tea are even more effective at fighting the progression of cancer than the antioxidants found in red wine and grapes.
